When thinking about secret agents many of us would think of James Bond: he lived dangerously, each exciting mission putting his life at risk, with beautiful yet treacherous women around; one assumes a life full of glamour. Reality is different.

In Lee St Lawrence: The Man Behind the Peace Corps, co-authors Joan and Pierre Delva share biographic snippets of a real secret agent. Lee was an extraordinary and dear friend, a much greater person than James Bond. This biography provides a brief account of his life. Lee St Lawrence was born in Brockton, a poor suburb of Boston, on January 1st 1923, the eldest of four. His parents were poor immigrants from Europe. Lee talked little about his childhood. After Secondary school, he went to College until Pearl Harbour when he ran away and joined the Army. Joan and Pierre, Ann and Lee became great friends after WWII in England; the friendship was renewed after Lee retired in 1974.

Readers will discover the authors life experiences interspersed with those of Lee’s: he had become Head of the Asian Administrative Branch of the Peace Corps in 1961, asked by Sargent Shriver to lead the second Mission of the Peace Corps in Tanzania in December 1961: it was a great success. What did Lee do then?

This book will be featured at the California Library Book Exhibit in Pasadena, CA, on November 11-14, 2011.
